Fontanafredda

Historic winery immersed in the fascinating hills of the Langhe, Fontanafredda winery was born from the Roggeri Giacomo estates in Serralunga d'Alba, later registered in the private estate of Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Sardinia, in 1858. However, it was Emanuele Guerrieri Count of Mirafiore, the king’s son, who started commercial activity, twenty years later, in 1878, thanks to his strong passion combined with a spirit of initiative and an uncommon foresight. Today Fontanafredda is owned by the entrepreneur and passionate Oscar Farinetti, patron of Eataly, and has an extension of about 122 hectares, of which 84 are planted with vineyards, divided among the most prestigious municipalities in the Barolo area: Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo and Diano d'Alba. Among the rows you’ll find Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Moscato, with an increasingly prevalent part destined for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, for the production of the new sparkling DOCG Alta Langa, expression of the noblest bubbles of Piedmont and rapidly rising on the market. The estate also consists of the historic cellars, the Villa Reale and a large nature reserve. Today Fontanafredda is part of the Vino Libero association, a group of 12 wine producers and 1 distillery, united by the intention of developing sustainable agriculture, in combination with a continuous research process aimed at safeguarding nature and minimal intervention: Fontanafredda is in fact experimenting in order to limit the use of sulfur dioxide. The vineyards live in a dynamic and diverse ecosystem, the soils are worked with the controlled grassing technique, without any use of chemical fertilizers and herbicides, but only organic substances. A company that still continues to make the history of Piedmont, and that with its labels - from the most prestigious Barolo to Barbera d'Alba, passing through the recent expressions of Alta Langa DOCG - has earned the title of "European Winery of the Year ”in 2017, awarded by the prestigious Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
