Château La Gaffelière

Located south of the wine region of Saint-Émilion, Château La Gaffelière, with its unique silhouette, is located right on the famous road "D122". Always owned by the estate, this path was known and used by the community to travel on horseback back in the days.
Château la Gaffelière is unmistakably synonymous with the production of great wines, being part of some of the most suited terroirs in the Saint-Émilion area. Here the vines were grown since the Gallo-Roman era, as evidenced by a number of historical proofs.
The family owning the Château, the Malet-Roqueforts have always refused to bow to the fashions of the moment, remaining true to a strong mix between tradition and modernity, respecting the terroir and its vocations to the utmost. Currently the estate covers over 32 hectares of vineyards, of which 22 are classified as 1st Grand Cru Classé, where Merlot (75% of the total) and Cabernet Franc are grown.
The plots are spread over 3 different areas: the limestone plateau, the hilly side, facing south and south-west, and down the hill, an area characterized by a fragile but healthy subsoil.
Since 2000, an important replanting program has started, and now each vineyard is able to age peacefully up to the age of about 35 years. The working methods have evolved to offer environmentally friendly viticulture; between the rows, the development of biodiversity is encouraged, trying to bring ripe bunches full of perfumes and deep scents to the harvest.
Entirely renovated in 2013, in the cellar you’ll find 20 stainless steel tanks characterized by an upside-down conical shape. This new space dedicated to winemaking is “high-tech”, innovative, aesthetic and practical at the same time, nevertheless fitting into a typically traditional architectural context.
As for aging, traditional oak barrels are used, 50% new for each vintage.
In addition to the legendary Grand Cru Classé, each vintage showcasing a lively and vivid expression of the terroir of Saint-Émilion, a second wine is also produced on the estate, the “Clos La Gaffeliére”, which drinks extremely smoothly and pleasantly.
