VINI ROSSI AUSTRIA
Central European elegance in a bottle
Our selection of Austrian red wines represents a fascinating journey through one of Europe's most surprising wine-producing regions. Austria, a country traditionally associated with great white wines, is experiencing a wine renaissance that sees its reds emerging as protagonists of extraordinary elegance. The continental climate, mitigated in some areas by the influence of Lake Neusiedl and characterised by significant temperature variations, creates ideal conditions for reds of great aromatic finesse and vibrant freshness. From Burgenland, the epicentre of production, to Lower Austria and the small but promising Styria, each bottle tells the story of a territory that has created an unmistakable style, combining Central European precision and Mediterranean warmth.
Blaufränkisch and Zweigelt: the protagonists of the Austrian renaissance
Blaufränkisch, a native grape variety considered the most noble of the Austrian red varieties, is at the heart of our collection. Genetically related to Gamay and Pinot Noir, it finds its maximum expression in Mittelburgenland and in the Eisenberg and Leithaberg areas. It is distinguished by a refined aromatic profile of crisp berries, spicy notes of black pepper and a floral touch, supported by a fine tannic structure and vibrant acidity. Alongside Blaufränkisch, our selection highlights Zweigelt, Austria's most widespread red grape variety, which offers immediately enjoyable wines dominated by notes of cherry and black cherry, with a silky tannic structure that makes them extremely versatile at the table.
Organic and biodynamic: the sustainable avant-garde
A distinctive feature of Austrian winemaking is the extraordinary prevalence of organic and biodynamic practices, with one of the highest percentages of certified organic viticulture in Europe. This environmental awareness translates into wines of extraordinary expressive purity, often vinified with minimal intervention: spontaneous fermentation, limited use of sulphites and ageing in neutral wood or alternative containers. Austrian red wines are now one of the most exciting discoveries for enthusiasts looking for characterful labels off the beaten track, offering a fascinating alternative to both the more austere wines of Northern Europe and the sunnier Mediterranean wines.
