TEMPRANILLO

The noble soul of Iberian viticulture

Tempranillo represents the very essence of Spanish winemaking, a grape variety of extraordinary nobility capable of authentically expressing the complexity and diversity of Iberian terroirs. Known by numerous synonyms in different regions – Tinta Fina or Tinta del País in Ribera del Duero, Ull de Llebre in Catalonia, Cencibel in La Mancha, Tinta Roriz in Portugal – this versatile grape variety is the undisputed star of the Iberian Peninsula's most celebrated wines. Its extraordinary ability to adapt to different microclimates has allowed the development of distinct regional expressions, from the cooler continental climate of the Ribera del Duero plateau to the milder, Atlantic conditions of Rioja. Our selection explores this rich territorial mosaic, favouring producers who interpret the different terroirs with respect and precision and who represent both the established tradition and the stylistic renewal that has characterised Spanish winemaking in recent decades. Particular attention is given to wineries that work according to sustainable practices, preserving old bush vines and enhancing the native ampelographic heritage through massal and clonal selections that maintain the biodiversity and uniqueness of the different Tempranillo ecotypes that have developed over the centuries in different regions.

Rioja and Ribera del Duero: two interpretations of a regal grape variety

The heart of our collection is represented by the two regions that have brought Tempranillo to international prominence: Rioja and Ribera del Duero. In Rioja, where the grape variety expresses itself in wines of extraordinary elegance and longevity, our selection explores the entire stylistic spectrum, from classics aged in American oak barrels with their characteristic profile of vanilla, coconut and sweet spices, to more modern interpretations that favour the use of French oak or reduced ageing times to better preserve the fruit. Particular attention is paid to the different terroirs of the region, from Rioja Alta with its calcareous and clayey soils that impart elegance and finesse, to Rioja Alavesa with its more calcareous matrix that produces wines of extraordinary structure and complexity. In Ribera del Duero, where Tempranillo finds expression in wines of greater power and concentration thanks to extreme temperature variations and high altitude, our selection highlights the different stylistic interpretations, from the most traditional wines to the modern masterpieces that have elevated the region to a symbol of Spanish oenological excellence. The typical aromatic profile ranges from notes of ripe black fruit (blackberry, plum, blackcurrant) to complex nuances of leather, tobacco and spices, with an important but refined tannic structure that guarantees extraordinary ageing potential.

Beyond the classic territories: new frontiers for Tempranillo

Our selection goes beyond the boundaries of the most famous appellations to explore other fascinating territorial expressions of Tempranillo. Toro, with its sandy soils and old pre-phylloxera vines, produces versions of extraordinary concentration and power, while neighbouring Cigales offers more elegant and vertical interpretations. In Navarra, where Tempranillo coexists with French varieties, we find interesting blends that combine the structure and elegance of the Iberian grape with the character of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The collection also includes interesting examples from Portugal, where Tempranillo, known as Tinta Roriz or Aragonez, is a fundamental component of Douro and Alentejo blends, contributing structure, fruit and ageing potential. Particular focus is given to emerging producers who are exploring fresher and more immediate approaches, with vinification methods that favour delicate extraction and limited use of wood, resulting in wines that express the fruit and terroir with greater transparency. The collection also includes interesting interpretations from the New World, particularly from the cooler regions of Australia and California, which are successfully experimenting with this noble Spanish grape variety. From timeless classics to pioneers of innovation, our selection of Tempranillo represents a fascinating journey through one of the most versatile and intriguing grape varieties on the world wine scene, capable of producing wines that are extraordinarily drinkable on a daily basis but also authentic masterpieces of complexity and longevity, perfect for enriching the collections of the most demanding enthusiasts.
