Castellare di Castellina

Historic Chianti Classico winery, Castellare di Castellina took its current form in 1968, thanks to the merger of five different farms. A magical place where the vineyards - 33 hectares in total - are perfectly integrated into the environment, between woods and other crops. An area in which excellent sun exposure, good water drainage, mixed soils of calcareous marl, marl and little clay, have always produced well-structured, intense wines suitable for long aging potential. The winery has been owned by the entrepreneur Paolo Panerai since the late 1970s, and he immediately began a long process of research aimed at improving all the labels. A careful census of the vines, undertaken immediately after purchase, made it possible to select the best species of Sangiovese for the "Sodi di San Niccolò", the winery's flagship wine. Not only that: an experimental plot planted on the property in collaboration with the universities of Milan and Florence and with the oenological institute of San Michele all'Adige, allows continuous research on the best clones as well as the production of selected cuttings for the renewal of the vineyards. At an altitude of about 370 meters above sea level, the vines are aged 5 to 30 years, and they produce grapes of excellent quality. In the cellar, the bunches of Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera, along with Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, are processed pursuing one main objective: to express and enhance all the intrinsic peculiarities belonging to the varietal and deriving from the terroir. On each label there’s a bird standing out every year, chosen from those in danger of extinction as to underline the care and respect that the estate has towards the environment. Castellare di Castellina’s wines represent without a doubt the best of Tuscan tradition.
