ELIO ALTARE

Elio Altare represents an important character in Langhe's recent history. Elio's grandfather, Giuseppe, bought the farmhouse with the first 5 hectares owned in the municipality of La Morra, in the very core of Langhe. In a very difficult period for the area, in '76 young Elio Altare left for Burgundy and there he learned new production techniques. Thus the “Barolo Boys” movement was born, from the innovative spirit of some inspired Langhe's winemakers in the 1980s, among who Elio Altare was one of the main protagonists: a movement that tried to make the Langhe known in the world, through innovative techniques in the cellar and the barrique aging method. This way Elio Altare and the other Barolo Boys went completely unconventional, abandoning the Barolo traditional large barrels, often reused for many years. To Elio Altare goes the merit of pursuing his beliefs even after the movement became very popular: he still uses barriques, while working the vineyard in a very natural way and making wines, to the days, loved and praised everywhere. The 5 hectares of property have now doubled in number with the rented land, in La Morra and some in Barolo, Castiglione Falletto, Monforte and Serralunga d’Alba. Since 2000 the winery is run by the daughter Silvia, who manages the company in an impeccable way, preserving the prestige of her father's wines in the world.
