CHÂTEAUNEUF DU PAPE ROUGE

Southern Rhône's Masterpiece

Châteauneuf-du-Pape stands as the historic pinnacle of Southern Rhône winemaking, where centuries of tradition meet modern excellence. This prestigious appellation, once the summer residence of the Avignon popes, continues to produce some of France's most celebrated red wines.

The terroir is legendary: the famous 'galets roulés' (rolled stones) retain heat during the day and release it at night, perfectly ripening the blend of up to 13 permitted varieties, though Grenache typically dominates. The fierce Mistral wind and Mediterranean climate create ideal conditions for producing wines of exceptional depth and complexity.

Modern Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds showcase remarkable concentration with newfound elegance. These wines typically display intense aromas of ripe black fruits, garrigue herbs, spice, and subtle game notes, developing extraordinary complexity with age.

Perfect Moments and Pairings

Most Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds begin showing their best after 5-7 years, with top vintages evolving beautifully for decades. Recent outstanding vintages include 2019, 2016, and 2015, each offering unique expressions of this remarkable terroir.

These powerful yet refined wines excel with equally robust dishes: game, lamb dishes, beef daube, and mature cheeses. Serve at 16-18°C to fully appreciate their complex bouquet. For optimal enjoyment, decant younger vintages 1-2 hours before serving.
